What Mar Vista actually is
Mar Vista sits on the north end of Longboat Key, tucked into Buttonwood Bay along the Sarasota Bay Intracoastal. It is a dockside restaurant and pub with a private dock, a marina lawn, a covered bayview deck directly over the water, and multiple outdoor dining areas beneath 100-year-old Buttonwood trees strung with lights.
The aesthetic is what Florida used to look like before it became what Florida looks like now. Genuinely historic, waterfront, unpretentious in the best possible way. The kind of place that feels like a discovery even when you've been there before.
The food is locally sourced and exceptional — fresh seafood, farm-to-table produce, a menu that rotates with what's actually available. The bar program is strong. The staff understands events. And the setting does something that very few venues can do: it makes guests feel like they are somewhere real, not somewhere staged.
Why it works so well as a welcome dinner venue
A welcome dinner has one job: to make guests feel like the weekend has begun and that being here was worth the trip.
Mar Vista does this better than anywhere else I have worked on the island. Guests arrive on a Friday evening, they are seated under ancient trees with water in every direction, the light is golden, the food is arriving, and the whole weekend suddenly feels like exactly what they hoped it would be.
The intimate scale of the space works in its favor for welcome dinners. This is not a venue that seats five hundred people. It is a venue that makes a group of sixty feel like they have been let in on something. That is precisely the right energy for a Friday evening before a wedding.
For Kate and Jaime's weekend, Mar Vista was the opening night of a three-day wedding experience. Guests flew in from out of state, arrived on the island, and found themselves at a waterfront table under Buttonwood trees with the bay behind them. Before the weekend had officially started, it already felt like it was worth the trip.

Practical planning notes
Spaces available: The Buttonwood Bay outdoor area accommodates intimate gatherings beautifully. The bayview deck works well for larger groups. The dock and marina lawn add a waterfront element that photographs exceptionally well, particularly in evening light.
Capacity: Mar Vista is best suited for groups of 20 to 80 for a private event. It is not a large-scale venue — and that is a feature, not a limitation, for a welcome dinner.
Food and bar: Locally sourced, seafood-forward menu. The food quality is consistently one of the first things guests comment on. Full bar.
Logistics: Mar Vista is on the north end of Longboat Key, a short drive from both Anna Maria Island and the Mainsail Inn. For destination guests staying on the island, transportation between venues is worth building into the weekend plan.
What to know about the space: The outdoor areas are genuinely beautiful but they are outdoor. For a summer wedding weekend, factor in the heat and have a plan for it. For a fall or winter weekend, this venue is effortless.
Is Mar Vista right for your welcome dinner?
If you want an intimate, genuinely beautiful, waterfront Friday evening that feels like Old Florida rather than a hotel ballroom — yes. Mar Vista is the right choice.
If you have a guest list of more than eighty or ninety people and need a larger private event space, it may not be the right fit for your welcome dinner specifically. But if the scale works, there is no better opening act for an Anna Maria Island wedding weekend.
